Because He said so

Image
As Christians sometimes we avoid doing the wrong thing by talking ourselves out of it.  Like I won't lie because I'm a bad liar. Or I won't have sex outside marriage because I could get pregnant. So we walk around pleased with ourselves for upholding the commands that we've been given in the Bible. It's a means to an end, so that makes it OK, right? Wrong.     It's a weak defence against sin. It's easy to talk yourself out of something wrong. It's just as easy to talk yourself into it. Rationalisation is a very shaky fallible foundation. Just like that guy who built his house on the sand. In the end everything comes crashing down. The truth is that we are meant to do what the Bible says because God says so. Simple. It makes it much harder to sin when you know that doing so would be an offence against God and not whatever shaky man-made beliefs you may have. This is something that I was reminded of yesterday Needless to say, it was a total li...

Natural-haired girls' problems

Image
1.   When your hair products are out of stock and you just ran out. 2.   Deciding which home-made hair- mask or which new protective style you'd like to try first. 3.   When someone who doesn't believe in natural hair questions your choice. 4.   Wash day 5.   Losing Bobby pins 6.   How much breakage is too much? 7.   Detangling after braids 8.   People who want to run their fingers through your freshly bantu- knotted hair 9.   Running away from the rain 10.   Avoiding bed-head But in the end,  it's totally worth it when you look like this: Ciao...

XL

Image
This symbol could mean either Extra large. ..or as some of my friends would put it: extra little. But why do we have such bipolar opinions about women's bodies. When is it going to be fashionable to just be healthy. Men don't seem to have the same problem...except for that one time when they wore heels and that one time they were all popping steroids.    Don't get what I mean?  Exhibit A: the  roaring 20's (1920's). Women would actually bandage their boobs to their chests in pursuit of a boyish figure. There was also this thing about short hair and very loose-fitting dresses. Everything designed to downplay their femininity. The 20's    Then there's the 50's. The goal was voluptuous. Not curvy or plus size, but voluptuous. All those vintage dresses we're now so in love with were designed to enhance hips. Whether they existed or not. The 50's   Then in the 90's we had a 'dangerously thin' phase. And here we are in 2015 ...

A-Z Sunday Adjective Challenge

Image
I came across this challenge on my friend's blog:   The auxiliary diary   and I decided to give it a try. The aim is to give different attributes of God using the letters of the alphabet. Sounds like a piece of cake...huh? I found myself spending more time with my Bible than I usually do and that was pretty cool. Feel free to try your own challenge or chip-in in the comments section. Here goes: A for... Awesome Deuteronomy 7:21(NKJV) You shall not be terrified of them; for the Lord your God, the great and awesome God, is among you. B for... Benovelent Ephesians 2:4 (NKJV)  But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, C for... Creator I saiah 40:28 (NKJV)  Have you not known? Have you not heard? The everlasting God, the Lord, The Creator of the ends of the earth, Neither faints nor is weary. His understanding is unsearchable. D for... Deep 1 Corinthians 2:10 (NKJV) But Go...

How to write a primary school composition: memoirs of a 90s kid

Image
The beginning depended on the type of composition. If I had been given a title, I'd start by describing how I woke up and ate the sumptuous breakfast my mother had lovingly prepared. If I'd been given a starting line or ending line,  I'd jump right into the story feet-first without even knowing what it would eventually be about. But I'd have  had all  that figured out by the end of the first paragraph.    I'd get all poetic and talk about how the birds sang like angels or the shower reminded me of Victoria fallls. Never mind the fact that I've never heard an angel sing and I've never seen Victoria fallls. Similies earn you marks kids....remember that!    My stories tended to gravitate towards the narration of kidnappings, hi-jackings or robberies. For some reason we'd decided that action -packed stories like these made for better story-telling. They gave you the opportunity to use phrases like 'shaking in fear like a chameleon on a ...

Of fitness challenges and other pinterest fancies

Image
I recently finished a 30-day ab and squat challenge that I downloaded off pinterest . How does it feel?  Epic! That is if you totally ignore the soreness in my obliques..but no pain no gain right?  Around this time  last year I developed a keen interest in my health that was driven by two-parts med-student syndrome and one-part vanity. Med-student syndrome because med school just made me very aware of how real heart disease,  diabetes, hypertension and other stuff  is.  That's just drama I'm not willing to deal with in my life if I can avoid it.  I also have a family history of diabetes, stroke and arthritis so I'm not going to stretch my luck too far.   And the vanity you ask?  I like wearing fitting clothes. ...having a pot belly just isn't conducive to such wardrobe tendencies.    But my fitness goals aren't just about losing weight. They involve  eating cleaner and drinking more water and yes....

The truth is: Kenya is the way it is because most of us don't stand up to corruption

Image
There is strength in numbers...don't you ever forget that    I’m not talking about the grabbing of public land or anything of that magnitude. Cases like those usually set our tongues wagging. They make us hold protests and sign petitions and cause a ruckus until the issue is dealt with. No, I’m talking about corruption on a smaller scale. Like when you go to get your car inspected and you have to give someone a ‘bonus’ or your vehicle will be deemed un-roadworthy...even if it’s brand new. Or when you use a Matatu and they charge more than the set fare...even though you all know you’re being conned.    My experience was the latter. I was on my way home on Saturday. I pick my matatus at Odeon. Just before the Matatu left, the guy in charge of the stage came and told us that the fare was 30 bob. He asked us to make sure we only paid that. We all nodded half-heartedly. This always happens. The guy in charge says 30 bob, but the conductor almost always asks ...
