What it means to be a writer

Image
1. A writer knows how to read between the lines of another writers work.  We catch-onto things that ordinary readers can't. 2. Writers observe the world a lot.  We pinpoint things about you that you didn't even think we noticed. Hence, 3. We get lost inside our own heads a lot.   We always have ideas floating around so It's not personal, I promise. 4. Writers use a lot of new vocabulary. We also read a lot so we end saying things like 'keep one apprised' instead of 'keep one updated'. 5. We get obsessive once inspired. That's the thing about ideas,  they demand to be written down. Like an itch you just have to scratch. 6. Writer's block is like having a phantom limb. You miss an integral part of yourself and  It drives you crazy! 7. We use similes ....a lot! Case in point, exhibit A: Me What does being a writer mean to you? Ciao...

A-Z Sunday Adjective Challenge

Image
I came across this challenge on my friend's blog:   The auxiliary diary   and I decided to give it a try. The aim is to give different attributes of God using the letters of the alphabet. Sounds like a piece of cake...huh? I found myself spending more time with my Bible than I usually do and that was pretty cool. Feel free to try your own challenge or chip-in in the comments section. Here goes: A for... Awesome Deuteronomy 7:21(NKJV) You shall not be terrified of them; for the Lord your God, the great and awesome God, is among you. B for... Benovelent Ephesians 2:4 (NKJV)  But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, C for... Creator I saiah 40:28 (NKJV)  Have you not known? Have you not heard? The everlasting God, the Lord, The Creator of the ends of the earth, Neither faints nor is weary. His understanding is unsearchable. D for... Deep 1 Corinthians 2:10 (NKJV) But Go...

How to write a primary school composition: memoirs of a 90s kid

Image
The beginning depended on the type of composition. If I had been given a title, I'd start by describing how I woke up and ate the sumptuous breakfast my mother had lovingly prepared. If I'd been given a starting line or ending line,  I'd jump right into the story feet-first without even knowing what it would eventually be about. But I'd have  had all  that figured out by the end of the first paragraph.    I'd get all poetic and talk about how the birds sang like angels or the shower reminded me of Victoria fallls. Never mind the fact that I've never heard an angel sing and I've never seen Victoria fallls. Similies earn you marks kids....remember that!    My stories tended to gravitate towards the narration of kidnappings, hi-jackings or robberies. For some reason we'd decided that action -packed stories like these made for better story-telling. They gave you the opportunity to use phrases like 'shaking in fear like a chameleon on a ...

My favourite posts of 2014

Image
A lot of creatives may claim to love all their work equally. Yeah, right! I'm going to be human and admit that that's not true in my case. 2014 was an interesting year for me. A lot of changes were made and I did a lot of growing. I discovered new things about myself and I let my writing take me where-ever. Therefore, as we countdown to the new year I feel it would be appropriate to make this post. These are my favourite blog-post of 2014....from this blog: 1.  Trust me, I'm no expert  ( I was just in that place ) 2. Things to do while stuck in Nairobi traffic  ( Rant of the year ) 3. That falling in love feeling  ( Poetic-much! ) 4. My first Foodie Fridays 5. The documentation of my hair journey: Naturalista experiment part 1 and part 2 6.   Book reviews  ( Something I've always wanted to do ) 7.   I tried to be a football fan and failed  ( World-Cup fever ) So totally feel...

Challenge Accepted

Image
I dare you, to do the positivity challenge. At first glance it looks like just some facebook fad that people are suddenly into but theres a sudden beauty in the thinking underliying it. All your life you've heard the phrase count your blessings, but have you ever taken time to actually do it.? I think I experienced what it was like through this challenge. I did day one wondering if I had enough content for day two..but by the time day two finally rolled-around, I was eager! Apparently being thankful and counting your blessings is good for the soul and I found myself with a near constant smile on my face and a spring in my step. So go on, Try it! And even when it's over, keep on thanking God for the little things. Day 1 Day 2 Day 3 Day 4 Day 5 Ciao...

Posting for the sake of posting

Image
Yes, that’s exactly what I’m doing tonight. No deep relationship insights. No opinionated political rants. No food posts. Just a good old-fashioned blog-post to fill in this gap on my page. What can I say? It’s been over a month and people are starting to ask questions. My excuse? I was sorta kinda busy? I know it’s weak but bear with me. I went from doing exams, to planning a musical, to counselling at a week-long teens camp, to singing in a musical then finally, to visiting my grand-parents on the other side of the country ( And yes, the musical was a success ).  Then when all that was done and I finally got home I just chilled all the way through the New Year in the laziest way possible. I thought that by new-year’s eve I’d have some inspirational idea for a blog-post that would knock everyone’s socks off with its awesomeness, but I had nada. Not that I really tried. Like I said, I’ve been the epitome of lazy after December was over.    So as I w...

Writer’s block 101

Image
If you have ever written any kind of essay in school, let alone a blog or article, then you know what I’m talking about. I believe it’s a step by step process so here goes: Stage 1: Intent     The feeling that comes over you, the overwhelming desire to etch your words into immortality in some way. So the will to write is definitely there. You pick up your pen and paper, or if you’ve embraced a more eco-friendly approach, you open a new Microsoft word document (l ol ). You look at the page and start writing or typing. If you’re lucky you already have a title. If you don’t well, that’s just too bad, you just have to wrack your brain a little harder. You write a few lines of what at first had seemed like a brilliant idea. And then you suddenly stop for one of two possible reasons: a) You’ve realized that what your writing sounds like complete and utter nonsense b) You’ve suddenly run out of ideas or rather the idea you had has come to an abrupt stop . Kind...

The official life guidebook (Random book-post no.1)

Image
One of my life ambitions is to write a book. As I sit here typing I don’t know what this book will be about but all I know is that I want to one day call myself a published author. So today I was having one of those days when I wished that life came with a manual which had a blow by blow account of how to handle everything that comes your way. And then that thought evolved into me thinking about what I would write in such a book. So I did what I always do when I get such random ideas in my head: I hurried to my laptop and started to type!    So this is an excerpt of my version of a life guidebook. It even comes with a disclaimer and everything so, happy reading! :D The full version of the book will be out in stores soon. He he! (If I ever get to seriously publish such a book, I will have all my friends over at my place and we’ll have a good laugh about it) Disclaimer: The contents of the following pages are purposed solely for the enjoyment and hysterical laughter of ...

Just Google It!!!!!!

Image
A couple of weeks ago some of my facebook friends started copy-pasting a  status update about some movie that apparently portrays Jesus as a homosexual and so the status urges the reader not to watch the movie and to re-post the status so that people would get to know. The update goes something like this: “ I know you may love watching movies but for Christ sake, don't get tempted. The movie Corpus Christi is due to be released this June to August. This disgusting film is set to appear in America later this year and it depicts Jesus and his disciples as homosexuals! As a play, this has already been in theatres for a while. It's called Corpus Christi ' which means 'The Christ Body.' It's a revolting mockery of our Lord. But, we can make a difference. That's why I am sending this e-mail to you. If you do send this around, we may be able to prevent this film from showing in AFRICA. Apparently, some regions in Europe have already banned the film. We nee...

The scariest thing about blogging

Image
Bloggers and writers the world over may have different answers to this question (And I believe that this applies to writers too). But in my opinion it’s ‘Baring your thoughts and opinions to this bevy of people who can either like it or hate it’. And trust me, people can be very critical!! Just look at any random movie review and you’ll see what I mean. For example some of you may have watched ‘The Avengers’ or ‘The Dark knight rises’ and thought that they were the best movies made this year (Yes, I confess that those are my favourite 2012 movies so far.... :-) ) but somewhere..out there..... there’ll be someone who thinks that they are total crap!       Hence the reason why I don’t rely on book, movie or music critics so that I can judge whether something is worth my time/money. I like to form my own opinions because in the 2 decades I’ve spent on this planet I’ve learnt that criticism is simply opinion. And opinion can be heavily biased ...

My first blog!!!!! *Excitement* :-) Why I'm doing this

You know what I love about reading and writing facebook notes? It's that you are able to share your thoughts and opinions/experiences in a unique way with all your friends. Writing is in itself an art, probably one of the oldest in the existence of the human race. I mean, think back to the era of the cave-men! They drew paintings of animals and themselves on ancient cave walls. Paintings which told and still continue to tell  the story of how they lived. In a way, that was their own form of literature, so to speak.    But so much is accomplished with the written word!!! A well written story, text or poem can have varying effects on the reader. It makes lovers who are far apart feel as if their loved ones are speaking to them face to face, it can convince a man to cast aside his earlier beliefs to support a well laid out argument, the stories within novels can make one feel the same emotions as the characters within the book; be it love or hate or tear-ind...
